What is Water Jet Processing?

Water Jet is often used during fabrication or manufacture of parts for machinery and other devices. It is the preferred method when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperatures generated by other methods. It has found applications in a diverse number of industries from mining to aerospace.

Benefits of water jet vs. traditional processing methods

The most common benefit of water jet cutting is the ability to cut material without interfering with the material’s inherent structure as there is no “heat-affected zone”. Minimizing the effects of heat allows metals to be cut without harming or changing intrinsic properties. Water jet cutting produces highly intricate profiles in material.

The high precision tolerances that water jet achieves have the ability to greatly reduce or in some cases even eliminate the need for post process machining. This advantage sets water jet processing apart from traditional plasma/flame cutting

Standard levels of water jet edge finish

Edge quality for water jet cut parts is defined with the numbers Q1 > Q5. Lower numbers indicate rougher edge finish while higher numbers are smoother, requiring significantly longer cutting time but reaching a heightened degree of finish and square.
